Costessey Park Seniors enjoyed a successful day today as they progressed to the next round of the Hodds Salver. They entertained Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club and were 7 up at the finish. This was sweet revenge because it was Gt Yarmouth and Caister GC who brought the seniors Barnard Trophy progress to a severe halt during the semi final played at their course.
The Hodds Salver is a competition for a senior team made up of members who have not represented their club in any of the county knock out competitions but have played in inter club matches. It is played for in a knock out formula similar to the other county knock outs.
Representing CPGC were Tony Burton, Barry Plater, Brian Burke, Neville Brown, Michael Oxbury, David Pennington, Derek Everitt and Brian Dowler.
Good luck in the next round.
Kevin Pratt and Stuart Tough are the toast of Norfolk after they won the 2007 final of The Daily Mail Men's Foursomes Knock Out. They have always been the pair to fear in Costessey Park Golf Club's own knock out competitions and now they have been recognised as a pair to avoid in National Knock Out competitions as they were acclaimed champions in this prestigious Foursomes competition.
The finals were hosted by the Marriott Forest of Arden between 21 - 23 October. The final sixteen teams gathered to battle out the final stages and Kevin and Stuart were drawn against opponents from Neath. This proved to be their only straight forward victory with the match being conceded when Neath were six down after ten holes.
In the quarter finals their opponents were from Cosby, Leicestershire and Kevin and Stuart found themselves two down with four to play. They fought back to square the match, going on to win it after two extra holes. In the semi final they met the City of Belfast giving four shots and were again two down with four to play. Birdies on the 15th and 18th brought them back to all square and they won the first extra hole.
In the final they conceded two shots to a pair representing Addington Palace, Surrey. The outward half was evenly contested but the Norfolk pair found themselves two down after the 13th. However a solid finish saw them crowned as champions.
Stuart is a past Norfolk handicap champion and Kevin is currently enjoying the Norfolk captaincy. They both talk of their pride in being able to bring the trophy back to Norfolk.
Congratulations to Chase Davis who scored rounds of 71 and 69 totalling 140 to become our club champion for 2007. His closest rivals were James Ollington with scores of 74 and 73 and Matthew Bacon with scores of 73 and 74 both totalling 147.
Congratulations also go to our handicap champion Richard Hurn (handicap of 15) with a net score of 137, who beat Chase Davis' net score of 140 and James Ollington's net score of 141.
Chase has had another great year in the 2007 County Order of Merit competitions. He has an unassailable lead of 300 points over his nearest rival with only one more round to play. He started the season as the holder and has maintained this form throughout the season. Another fantastic achievement this year was to reach the last qualifying round for the British Open. The success he achieved at Trentham with a round of one under was unfortunately not repeated at Panmure and he will be the first to admit his disappointment in not being able to qualify. What a great achievement to reach that final qualifier. He retained the club championship with rounds of 71 and 69 and his other successes were a second placing in the Norfolk Open, a third in the Norfolk Amateur and he also qualified for the 'Faldo Series Finals'. Not a bad year at all and hopefully lots more success to follow in 2008.
Dean Parker (our Junior Captain) led his team to victory in the 'Club Junior Team Challenge Shield (scratch) as he personally carded 70 and 75 around Costessey Park Golf Course. His team mates Matthew Bacon 73, 74 and Chris Paton 73, 74 helped to provide a score 9 shots clear of their nearest challengers - Dunston Hall GC.
