Following the departure of Gary Stangoe and Danny Chapman, and the fact that both Club Champion Lee Maxwell and Adam Sims were not available for selection, it was necessary to delve deeper into the ranks and to consider higher handicaps and some of the up and coming juniors.
The first round started with a home draw against Thetford. The players selected for this match were, Chase Davis, James Ollington, Alex Beckett, Paul Whiley, Stuart Tough, Kevin Pratt, Ian Rafferty and Dean Parker who all performed well and in a tight match won four up.
The second round was away at Feltwell and with Paul and Ian being unavailable two up and coming Juniors Chris Paton and Matthew Bacon were drafted in. The morning round ended with Costessey Park being 13 holes down and looking at a sizeable defeat, however the team kept their heads high and unbelievably managed to finish all square after 144 holes (James and Matthew winning the final hole to force a play off).
I selected Alex and James to contest the play off and they came up trumps winning the first extra hole with a solid par.
The third round for all our efforts we were rewarded with an away draw against Dereham. Julian Tayt who had been playing consistently at club level came in to partner Chase (Chris and Dean being rested).
In a very tight morning round Costessey Park finished two up, unfortunately the afternoon round was a different matter and Dereham tightened the screws and finished ten up (winning eight up on the day).
So ended our 2007 fight for the trophy.
My special thanks to all the players who took part and here's to 2008. Good luck John, you have a good squad to work with.
